Technology is the campfire around which we tell our stories. — Laurie Anderson
What is “Castellano”?
When I was on my mission, I had a number of Dominicans ask if I was from Spain, or if I spoke “Castellano”. As is unfortunately normal with me, I never really stopped to ask what they meant, but instead just went with it.
Recently I’ve been trying to actually identify areas of things that I don’t know, and have wondered about, and actually dedicate some time to learning those things. So today, I spent 5mins learning about what “Castellano” or “Castilian” Spanish actually is.
- Originally also synonymous with “Peninsular Spanish”
- Technically this term refers to the Spanish spoken in the northern and central portions of Spain
- Today, “castellano” really just generally is given to Spanish spoken in Spain, and not the Spanish of Latin America
- Differences between the two
- Castilian includes vosotros
- “Lisp” pronunciation of “c”
- “Vos” is an alternative to “tú” used in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay
